Friday, December 21, 2018

Farnaz Niroui, (NE Class of 2010) has accepted a position as assistant professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Working from her office in the new MIT.nano facilities, she will focus part of her research on developing new nanotechnology-related tools and techniques. Farnaz begins her new job in January 2019.

In an article about her appointment published in MIT News, Farnaz refers to her undergraduate education in University of Waterloo’s interdisciplinary Nanotechnology Engineering program. She emphasizes the importance of a multi-disciplinary background as a springboard for more specialised study.

Farnaz first became involved with MIT through an internship at MIT during a UWaterloo co-op term. She received her PhD and masters’ degrees from MIT and is currently a Miller Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of California at Berkeley.

According to MIT, her research “integrates electrical engineering with materials science and chemistry to develop hybrid nanofabrication techniques to enable precise yet scalable processing of nanoscale architectures capable of uniquely controlling light-matter interactions, electronic transport, and exciton dynamics to engineer new paradigms of active nanoscale devices.”

Congratulations to Farnaz on this latest step in an exciting career.
