Friday, November 22, 2019

Congratulations to fourth-year Nanotechnology Engineering students Holden Beggs, Alisha Bhanji, Zhenle Cao, Ishan Mishra and Fernando Pena. Their Capstone Design team, Scope, won $5,000 in the Concept $5K Finals that were held in Waterloo’s Student Life Centre on November 20, 2019.

The Concept $5K Grant supports University of Waterloo students who aspire to build an early-stage startup.

In competition for their round of grant money, nine teams took turns trying to convince panelists from the greater startup community that their concept has potential to succeed. In the process, they gained experience and received useful feedback to support the development of their entrepreneurial skills.

In their three-minute pitch, Scope impressed the panelists with their Capstone Design project: lenses with electronically tunable optical power for use in cellphone cameras.

The Concept $5K competition is hosted by Concept, a pre-incubator program designed by Velocity to support University of Waterloo students in a competitive and entrepreneurial world. Concept aims to develop students’ entrepreneurial stills and prepare them for entry to a top-ranked incubator. It offers general entrepreneurship funding, knowledge and coaching that support aspiring entrepreneurs and those who want to enhance their entrepreneurial skills.
