For 20 years, the Co-op Student of the Year awards have celebrated Waterloo’s most outstanding co-op students. From using artificial intelligence (AI) to help combat microbial resistance to enhancing patient care and integrating sustainability into logistics, this year’s award winners are making real-world impact that extends far beyond the workplace. 

Jordan Lin (BASc ’22) is a rising star in the global effort to tackle climate change.  

Partnerships play a critical role in educating the leaders of tomorrow.  

Since its inception, the Loran Scholars Foundation has worked with the University of Waterloo to support some of Canada’s most promising students. Selected for their leadership qualities and their commitment to serve their communities, Loran Scholars receive awards worth up to $100,000 over four years to support their education and their vision for a better world.   

For Chris Trothen (BMath ’75), being a university student was about more than classes.

“The University, in many cases, is a very special place when you are growing up ... learning how to be an adult,” said Chris. “The studies were important, but I was more interested in learning about how life worked.”

The University of Waterloo is proud to mark International Women’s Day (IWD) on March 8. Championing our female students, researchers and leaders makes Waterloo and Canada more resilient, innovative and prosperous.

While we mark this day across our campuses and faculties, we work every day to inspire those who are a part of our campuses and members of our communities. One way we can support this effort is to showcase the inspiring work of our female colleagues, students and alumni.

On March 13, 2025, the Moon will glow in shades of red and orange as it passes through Earth’s shadow during a total lunar eclipse, commonly called a Blood Moon. We spoke with Dr. Roan Haggar, a postdoctoral fellow and outreach coordinator at the Waterloo Centre for Astrophysics (WCA) at the University of Waterloo, to uncover its science and what to watch for in the night sky.

Velocity’s Health Innovation Challenges, in partnership with the Grand River Hospital Foundation (GRHF), offer University of Waterloo students an experiential learning opportunity with local hospitals and organizations. Students hear about the real-world challenges faced by patients and health-care workers in local hospitals and work with Velocity experts to develop practical solutions.
