A long round of applause followed the formal announcement in mid-January of a $32.6-million contribution from the federal government towards construction of the state-of-the-art Engineering 7 building at the University of Waterloo.

Cabinet minister Bardish Chagger shared the good news after touring a Waterloo Engineering laboratory doing work in the areas of cybersecurity and autonomous vehicles, the kind of innovative research that will be expanded in the new, seven-storey, 240,000-square-foot building on the east campus.

Corina Moore (BASc 1997, Systems Design) remembers exactly how she picked Waterloo Engineering, the first step on a career path that would take her around the world and back home again to Northern Ontario.

It was on a weekend about 25 years ago that the shy teenager from the hamlet of Commanda - population 50, give or take a few - looked around campus with her mother as she tried to decide where to go and what to take after high school.

Future plans and past achievements were highlighted when hundreds of students, staff, faculty members, alumni and donors gathered for the 2016 Waterloo Engineering Awards Dinner.

The event that recognized top students also celebrated distinguished graduates in four categories and a Waterloo Region family with a record of generous support for the Faculty and the University.

The original principle of academic freedom encompassed thought, expression and geography. 

Diversity is a strength of this university and of our country. Together, with universities across Canada, we will continue to welcome students, faculty and staff from around the world including those seeking refuge from violence and injustice.

Michael Robertson, director of the Capacity Planning and Priorities Branch with the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, will give a keynote address on the status of the strategy and plans to move it forward.

Following the lecture, three individuals living with dementia and a family partner in care will share their thoughts on the strategy in a panel discussion. The afternoon will conclude with the presentation of the Kenneth Murray Partnership in Dementia Award and a reception.

Stressing that mental health is just as important as physical health, University of Waterloo athletes have partnered with Bell Let’s Talk and regional university sports conferences to initiate campus wide discussion on mental health.

The study measures wisdom as the ability to be open-minded, intellectually humble and integrate different perspectives on the issue people reflect on.  In comparing social classes and their associated wisdom, the study reveals that more affluent regions and individuals, as well as situations reflecting higher social standing are linked with diminished ability to reason wisely.
