The University of Waterloo’s School of Pharmacy will host a free public lecture and panel discussion, entitled The Opioid Crisis: A Local Perspective on an International Epidemic on Thursday, November 10.

Prescription opioids play an essential role in minimizing the pain and suffering of patients in the healthcare system. However, opioids, such as fentanyl, have quickly become a prescription drug problem. These drugs are highly addictive, often misused, and can lead to injury and death.

Location: School of Pharmacy, 10 Victoria Street South, Kitchener

Parking: Public pay parking at the School of Pharmacy lot on Joseph Street

Panel participants from Waterloo Pharmacy and the Region of Waterloo Public Health:

  • Michael Beazely, associate professor at the School of Pharmacy, will discuss what opioids are and how we've reached the 'opioid crisis' of today.
  • Kelly Grindrod, assistant professor at the School of Pharmacy, will share ideas on how pharmacists and others can play a part in curbing the crisis.
  • Chris Harold, public health representative from the Region of Waterloo, will share local data and perspective on opioids as well as the response to opioid misuse in Waterloo Region.

There will be an open Q&A discussion with the speakers following the formal remarks.
