The students will present their groundbreaking research projects and compete for top honours, including the chance to represent Ontario at the SBC 2016 National Final in Ottawa on May 2 and May 3.

Media are invited to attend the day-long event. Students will give a brief oral presentation followed later by a public research poster viewing during which they will be available for photos and to answer questions.

More than 2,000 spectators are expected to cheer on teams from 31 high schools from across Ontario and the U.S. as they face off at the University of Waterloo this week at the annual FIRST Robotics Waterloo Regional Competition.

The high-tech sporting competition involves brainstorming, teamwork and mentoring. Referees oversee the contest and judges give awards for design, technology, sportsmanship and commitment. This is considered the toughest FIRST Robotics regional competition in the world and the longest-running in Canada.

A research collaboration between a University of Waterloo biologist and the Kluane First Nation is coming up with good news for the Yukon community - so far, the research team is finding extremely low levels of mercury in the fish.

Rapid climate change, high mercury levels in fish and unaffordable store prices are just some of the threats to food security in Canada’s northern communities. Members of the Kluane First Nation are working with Heidi Swanson, a University Research Chair in the Faculty of Science, to test fish mercury levels as part of a larger food security project.

A robot designed to safely defuse landmines without an explosion was one of six major winners at the 2016 Norman Esch Capstone Design Awards competition for University of Waterloo engineering students.

Landmine Boys’ five founders are mechanical engineering students who will graduate this spring. Their impressive pitch won them $10,000 to help cover startup and other costs.

Four University of Waterloo faculty members have been recognized for excellence in teaching with the University’s most prestigious teaching honour - the Distinguished Teacher Award (DTA).

The DTA consists of a citation along with a $1,500 award to be used by the recipients in support of any teaching activities. The awards will be presented by Mario Coniglio, associate vice-president, academic, at the June convocation ceremony.

Members of the media are invited to attend a juried year-end exhibition today featuring works by students in the Global Business & Digital Arts program and the Master of Digital Experience Innovation program at the University of Waterloo.

The exhibition includes large-scale installations, motion graphic, info-graphics, audio narratives, interactive mobile experiences and sound narratives.

Guests will explore the gallery-style exhibition throughout the campus where the student projects will be on display.  Students will be on hand to discuss their work.
