“Inspiration, technology, competency, structure and risk.” These are the pillars that Commander Chris Hadfield said are the requirements for advancing the future of aeronautics at the inaugural Sustainable Aeronautics Summit on October 5, 2022.
For Jalisa Karim, interdisciplinary work comes naturally.
This fall, Karim will graduate with a BMath in biostatistics and a BA in sexuality, marriage and family studies.
While some might question her choice to pursue degrees from two very different sides of campus, for her the pairing makes sense.
“I think interdisciplinary research is so important,” she says. “Fields don’t exist in a vacuum. Understanding the context around the research questions you’re trying to answer is essential.”
If there is one key commonality among PhD researchers at the University of Waterloo, it is a commitment to applied research.

Whether they worked remotely, in-person or in a hybrid setting, students made an impact across multiple industries.
While many of the students graduating this week have their sights set on fresh new horizons, Manouchka Bucktowar, who completed a BSc in Science and Aviation with a Physics specialization, has already experienced the horizon in ways few people ever will.
Bucktowar is one of approximately 15 students graduating from the University of Waterloo aviation program this year.

That’s how Alia Fatima describes her time working on a degree in Geography and Environmental Management in the Faculty of Environment at Waterloo.
“I’m passionate about making the world a better place, and I’ve come to see how environmental policy has a direct influence on communities,” she says. “In the end, it all comes down to people. I’m interested in human geographies and in the ways that environmental impacts affect people.”

The University of Waterloo celebrates the life and legacy of President Emeritus Douglas Tyndall Wright with a special event on September 23.
Wright, who served as the first dean of the Faculty of Engineering from 1958 to 1966 and as Waterloo’s third president and vice-chancellor from 1981 to 1993, passed away on May 21, 2020.
As his death occurred during the pandemic, the University was unable to properly mark his passing in a significant way.
