William Wong, associate professor in electrical and computer engineering, is working with MW Canada to create electronic fabric, where UV lights are integrated directly into fabric, to be used in water filtration systems. Drawing on the unique strength of MW Canada to develop custom fabrics, Wong is enhancing two unique technologies by combining electronic devices with textiles for new applications in order to use Canada’s resources more efficiently and keep water safe.

Waterloo device could take the pain out of diabetics’ blood tests

by Carol Truemner, Faculty of Engineering

A Waterloo Engineering student is developing a device that he hopes will let people with Type 1 diabetes test their blood sugar levels without the painful prick of a needle.

Shahid Haider was inspired to create the device - which takes pictures of the eye to determine blood glucose concentrations - after watching his younger brother struggle with the daily monitoring of his levels.

Baby Boomers have been referred to as the Me Generation, but new research indicates that people actually started to become increasingly self-centred more than 100 years ago.

In the first study of its kind covering a 150-year period, researchers looked at U.S. culture to determine how and why people there became more independent and less reliant on family ties, conformity and duty. This phenomenon is called individualism.

O’Leary’s talk, entitled Entrepreneurship – what it takes to be a success, aims to convince students to strike out and start their own businesses. He sees this as a means to drive the Canadian economy forward and create new jobs. He will be answering student questions and sharing his unique insights into making money.
