The University of Waterloo broke ground this week on Engineering 7, an $88-million building that will feature some of the best engineering research and teaching facilities in the world.

When Steve Lambert rejoined Waterloo Engineering as a professor he recalled his time as a student and the gap he felt between the conceptual learning of the classroom and the real-world work of a co-op term. He envisioned one method of bridging this gap, and he saw that engineering co-op students themselves could provide it—by turning their work term reports into case studies.

To engage students about ways to improve local government, professors might ask them to write an essay on how a bylaw works.
To engage students in her second-year Politics of Sustainable Communities course, recently retired associate professor Mary Louise McAllister called a few members of city staff and councillors and arranged to have students pitch their own sustainability bylaws at a council meeting.
Universities are known for preparing students for careers, but they don’t always do a great job of preparing them for the ups and downs of life. This winter, Waterloo students will have the chance to learn tools and tricks to stay healthy through whatever life throws at them, thanks to a new course developed by the Faculty of Applied Health Sciences.
Looking around Greta Kroeker’s office, you might think that the pre-modern birthing chair and the stained glass replica of Teresa of Avila’s convent window are artifacts from the associate history professor’s research trips. In fact, they are artifacts of her teaching — both objects were made by students in Kroeker’s third-year “Witches, Wives, and Whores” course.
“I believe that the most successful classroom learning happens when we let students follow, as much as possible, their own interests and play to their own strengths,” says Kroeker.
The 9,000+ students from across Canada and around the world joining the University of Waterloo as new students this September all have one thing in common: an invitation to attend Fall Orientation 2015.
That’s where the similarities end though, because Waterloo is welcoming a diverse group - everyone from first-year students and transfer students to graduate students. Waterloo’s Orientation programs have evolved to support this diverse student community.
