They are travelling from as close as Oakville, Ontario and as far away as Coquitlam, British Columbia, but this year’s Schulich Leader scholarship winners were all drawn to the Univeristy of Waterloo by its reputation for innovation, high standards, and entrepreneurial spirit.

For some, calling Waterloo home will mean the realization of a lifelong dream:

NSERC scholarships, fellowships shape the future of Waterloo research

by Staff, Marketing and Strategic Communications

From advanced engineering to developing a deeper understanding of the Arctic, graduate and post-graduate students at the University of Waterloo are critical contributors to research that benefits Canadians.

It’s a competitive field, where top students from institutions across Canada strive to prove that their research deserves to be funded. At Waterloo, postgraduate and postdoctoral students are awarded more funding per capita for that research than at any other institution in Canada.

ESQ: Engineering and science outreach program celebrates 25 years

by Carol Truemner, Faculty of Engineering

For some, it’s building a wind turbine to harness enough energy to race a car. For others, it’s creating a boat out of cardboard and duct tape. For six-year-old Max Griffiths, there isn’t  just one highlight of his first camp experience in 2015 — there  are many.

Engineering Science Quest, better known as ESQ, celebrates its 25th anniversary this year. The milestone will be marked July 22 at a breakfast event in Engineering 5’s Sedra Student Design Centre. One of the speakers will be Michelle Miller, who co-founded the ESQ summer camp in the fall of 1990.

Open data at Waterloo fosters student innovation

by Christian Aagaard, Marketing and Strategic Communications

Kartik Talwar wanted something more out of the University of Waterloo when he arrived as a student in 2010: information, and lots of it.

It wasn’t that it didn’t exist; it was just in scattered digital nooks and crannies. Talwar, who graduates this year in math and physics, sought a single source from which to shape his student life, a giant repository of data about programs, courses, timetables and services.

So he built one, invited others to contribute and collaborate, and thus added his weight behind the University’s advance into the world of open data.
