Bench Scale Filter Columns

Filter columns were designed primarily for research involving a range of filtration issues including turbidity, particle and microorganism removal. They are also used extensively for biofiltration studies.

Some of the main features of this experimental set up include:

• flow through design fed by dechlorinated tap water
• ability to alter water quality by adding disinfectants, nutrients and particles
• capability to change operating parameters such as flow rate or temperature
• different backwashing options including air scour
• investigations of up to 4 filters in parallel
• use of inert materials such as glass and fluorocarbon tubing
• sampling ports at selected filter depths
