Filter columns were designed primarily for research involving a range of filtration issues including turbidity, particle and microorganism removal. They are also used extensively for biofiltration studies.
Some of the main features of this experimental set up include:
- flow through design fed by dechlorinated tap water
- ability to alter water quality by adding disinfectants, nutrients and particles
- capability to change operating parameters such as flow rate or temperature
- different backwashing options including air scour
- investigations of up to 4 filters in parallel
- use of inert materials such as glass and fluorocarbon tubing
- sampling ports at selected filter depths
