OBEC SAE Event
In December the Waterloo Institute for Nanotechnology hosted an event called "Recharge 2025: Inside Canada’s EV Battery Technology" with SAE Central Ontario and the Office of Research of University of Waterloo. The event brought innovators and leaders powering Ontario’s battery ecosystem together.
Co-leads of the University of Waterloo’s Ontario Battery and Electrochemistry Research Centre (OBEC) Professor Linda Nazar from the Department of Chemistry and Professor Michael Pope from the Department of Chemical Engineering were speakers at the event.
Nazar and Pope’s presentation highlighted 16 faculty members from the University of Waterloo whose multidisciplinary research groups are part of OBEC.
It also showcased the advanced technologies housed in the OBEC labs, from materials synthesis and processing tools to operando characterizations tools. The presentation also touched on OBEC’s battery cell fabrication and testing capabilities.
Event goers also took part in an exclusive tour of OBEC’s state-of-the-art facilities, underscoring the University of Waterloo’s strengths in battery and electrochemistry research.
The event brought together industry leaders from PowerCo and Vianode, the National Research Council Canada / Conseil national de recherches Canada, OBEC’s world-class researchers and adjacent UWaterloo institutes and teams, such as Battery Workforce Challenge and the MSAM Centre to spark collaboration and innovation across the fast-evolving EV battery sector.
