Introducing Hossein

Hossein Mashhadimoslem holds a PhD in chemical engineering from one of the top universities in Iran (IUST) and was recognized as a top researcher in 2021. Last year, Hossein was honoured with the Quantum Prize in Transformative Technologies (TQT), which marks one of his most significant achievements to date. Hossein joined the University of Waterloo in 2023 as a postdoctoral scholar in the Department of Chemical Engineering.
Research at Waterloo
During his time at Waterloo, Hossein has been researching materials discovery using artificial intelligence (AI) and the design of adsorbents, catalysts, and battery materials. "It has been fascinating to be able to model the molecular and atomic structures of materials in code."
Many challenges have come up, including navigating the use of supercomputers and pushing the limits of discovery in composite materials for energy applications.
Advice to postdocs
“The first lesson I learned was to have discipline in research activities,” says Hossein. "First, establish discipline in your schedule and work hard to establish good academic and industrial connections, as those will be essential for future research." Hossein also emphasizes the importance of perseverance while on your research path. Things may not always go to plan, but it is important to be patient.
With over a decade of experience contributing to large-scale industrial megaprojects, Hossein also offers advice to those looking to transition from academia to industry. “Today’s rapid advancements in internet technologies have made high-quality industrial knowledge far more accessible. I recommend and encourage reviewing reports of completed industrial projects in Europe and North America, available on reputable company websites, as they provide valuable insights and an accurate perspective on the industry”.
Additional advice from Hossein includes keeping a close eye on the market, as “the possibility of implementing startup ideas close to your research path can arise” unexpectedly and quickly.
