As per the tri-agency research training award holder’s guide, all recipients of the Canada Impact+ Research Training Award must begin their appointment on the first of a month, and no later than January 1, 2027 (NSERC or SSHRC) or March 1, 2027 (CIHR).

To begin an appointment, postdocs must be residing in Ontario and be legally authorized to work in Canada. International applicants should review current immigration processing times to identify a realistic start date. 

As per the eligibility criteria in the University of Waterloo postdoctoral guidelines, applicants must have completed their PhD no more than 5 years prior to the appointment start date. The window of eligibility can be extended by a cumulative maximum of three years (36 months) if the applicant had their academic career interrupted for one or more of the following reasons:

  • Maternity/pregnancy and/or parental leave
  • Illness
  • Health-related family responsibilities
  • Mandatory military service
  • Attention to matters of cultural or community significance
  • Disruptions due to war, civil conflicts and/or natural disasters in a country of residence

You will receive a copy of the required CIRTA nomination form only after an expression of interest to nominate is submitted by the proposed supervisor (step 3 as listed in the CIRTA critical steps). Applications submitted without this completed document, and without an expression of interest to nominate, will not be considered by the adjudication committee.
