Provost's Programs for Postdoctoral Scholars | Application form

The deadline for submitting the application is 9:00am EST on December 2, 2024.

Important reminder for applicants: It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure that all required application documents are submitted to Graduate Studies and Postdoctoral Affairs (GSPA) by the application deadline. This includes: a completed supervisor endorsement form, a completed application form, and two letters of reference. GSPA will not follow up with identified referees or supervisors to ensure documents are received.

All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadian Citizens and Permanent Residents of Canada will be given priority.
For the purposes of this fellowship, an Indigenous person is one who is a citizen or member of a First Nations (Status/Non-Status), Métis, Inuit community as defined in the Canadian Constitution Act 1982. Additionally, Black applicants may include those of African, Caribbean, Black Canadian, Afro-Latine, African American, or other African descent.

Indigenous applicants: To protect the integrity of Indigenous candidates, applicants who identify as Indigenous are required to provide documentation confirming their Indigenous identity. This supporting documentation will be verified by the Indigenous Relations Office at the University of Waterloo. Examples of acceptable documentation include Status card, Band membership card, citizenship card issued by a Métis National Council governing member or the Manitoba Métis Foundation, land claim beneficiary card, a letter from an Indigenous community, an affidavit which explains why you claim Indigenous citizenship/membership without documentation.

Black applicants: Applicants who identify as Black must provide a written attestation that they identify as belonging to the respective community, including an explanation of how their lived experiences demonstrate their inclusion in one of these communities. This statement will be reviewed by the Office of Equity, Diversity, Inclusion & Anti-racism (EDI-R) in the evaluation of Black applicants.

As per the eligibility criteria, applicants must have completed their PhD no more than 5 years prior to July 1, 2025 (no earlier than July 1, 2020). The window of eligibility can be extended by a cumulative maximum of three years (36 months) if the applicant had their academic career interrupted for one or more of the following reasons:

  • Maternity/pregnancy and/or parental leave
  • Illness
  • Health-related family responsibilities
  • Mandatory military service
  • Attention to matters of cultural or community significance
  • Disruptions due to war, civil conflicts and/or natural disasters in a country of residence
Acceptable documentation includes a scanned copy of diploma OR official transcript showing degree conferral OR official letter of completion (or anticipated date of completion) from institution.

The University of Waterloo is eager to host scholars as early as July 1, 2025 and no later than September 30, 2025 (start dates after September 30 will only be allowed in exceptional circumstances, such as to allow for immigration processing timelines).
