On Friday, March 28, the website of Canada's U15 group of research-intensive universities published "Global research, global affairs", an op-ed by Feridun Hamdullahpur outlining the strategic significance of research-intensive universities to Canada's international relationships.

Welcoming Chris Hadfield to Campus

On December 3, 2013, the University of Waterloo officially welcomed renowned astronaut Chris Hadfield to the Warrior family. Hadfield was in town for a public lecture and book signing, but it was a preview of things to come for the Waterloo community.

President Hamdullahpur on Wednesday served as host of the "Towards Sustainable Partnerships: Canada's Aboriginal Communities and the Resources Sector" summit with the University of Waterloo School of Environment, Enterprise and Development (SEED) in Toronto.

The goal of the event was to identify initiatives to build a more mutually beneficial relationship between Canada's aboriginal communities and primary industries.

Fall Convocation

The University of Waterloo celebrated Fall Convocation 2013 on Friday, October 25 and Saturday October 26. 2,352 degrees were conferred upon the university's newest alumni.

On Friday, humanitarian Stephen Lewis received an honorary Doctor of Laws and addressed convocation as guest speaker. Professor Leslie Valiant of Harvard University received an honorary Doctor of Mathematics degree and addressed convocation's second day, on Saturday.
