From Tuesday, June 11 through Saturday, June 15, the University of Waterloo celebrated Convocation, sending the newest wave of Waterloo grads out into the world.

Over 5,400 degrees were awarded during throughout the course of the week. From Tuesday through Friday, each day featured two ceremonies, with the final ceremony taking place Saturday morning.

"Convocation is the most special occasion at the university," said President Hamdullahpur.

On Friday, June 7, the University of Waterloo celebrated the continued success of the Keystone Campaign with the event “Waterloo World”, a day of fun that included music, dancing, and even a dunk tank.

Designed to bring together Waterloo faculty, staff, and retirees who give their time and resources to support campus-wide initiatives such as scholarships and projects to enhance the student experience, Keystone raised more than $1.3 million over the last campaign year.

On Tuesday, June 4, the Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) presented a gift of $1.75 million to the University of Waterloo in support of the Waterloo Institute's RBC Water Scholars program.

"The University of Waterloo has a long and proud history of interdisciplinary, innovative water research," said President Hamdullahpur during his remarks at the announcement. "We are here today because our partners at RBC share our belief in the importance of water research and preservation."

On Wednesday, May 8 and Thursday, May 9, President Feridun Hamdullahpur and Provost Geoff McBoyle hosted a set of Town Halls designed to discuss the university’s Strategic Plan and provide an update on next steps.

The Town Halls marked the conclusion of the Strategic Plan drafting process, facilitating a gradual pivot to the approval, implementation, and accountability phases.

“I am truly energized about this plan, and about this university,” said President Hamdullahpur. “The participation from campus was fabulous.”

On Thursday the Conference Board of Canada continued the steady drip of disappointing news about Canada’s research and innovation performance.

Ranked 13 of 16 industrialized countries for innovation and related metrics, Canada faces what can only be diagnosed as a crisis of complacency.
