The Centre for Society, Technology and Values (CSTV) is a unique University of Waterloo interdisciplinary centre that explores how we can answer these questions and more, in a series of Society, Technology and Values (STV) courses. As a core part of the Faculty of Engineering, STV courses are helping our engineering students come to grips with many of the major questions we face in a sophisticated technological society. You may have taken one of the STV courses when you were an engineering student but technological change is fast-paced and ever-evolving.

Responsible Engineering: The Impact of Technology on Society

Engineering work has a huge impact on society - we know that in the general sense. However, it can sometimes be hard to really understand how seemingly small design decisions can end up causing huge waves. In conversation with a recent engineer alum with a PEng and JD and legal professionals from the Law Commission of Ontario, we will discuss how design decisions in information systems and artificial intelligence end up creating major issues that we as a society are still figuring out how to address - from both a legal and engineering perspective.
