Artificial atoms based on superconductors are currently one of the main candidates for the implementation of a quantum computer and testbeds for various tests in fundamental quantum mechanics. Among these, superconducting flux qubits have unique properties, including large level anharmonicity and strong coupling to electromagnetic fields.
We present recent experiments in which flux qubits are strongly coupled to electromagnetic fields. We also discuss the prospects of these systems for relativistic quantum information experiments.
