As a means to understand perceived health security by patients in health settings, SmartSurveys was a platform on the MetricWire app which would prompt consenting patients to submit feedback to their health provider based on their smartphone's GPS location. I worked with Dr. Josephine McMurray of WLU and Dr. James Wallace of UW in an inter-university project to design study protocol which would be respectful and intuitive for study participants. The project is funded through SSHRC, and is pending results.
The study was presented at ISS 2018.
Project Overview
Healthcare providers (ie. pharamicists, family physicians, chiropractors) benefit from using patient experience feedback to make changes to their workflow thus improving their quality of care. Paper-based surveys in offices are common means of data collection but they come with data entry costs and can be be difficult to administer in areas with high traffic. Take-home surveys or electronic surveys can reduce human capital required with data entry, but suffer inaccuracy from poor memory when patients are asked to recount their experience after 48 hrs. Smartsurveys presents as a solution where patients are notified of an opportunity to provide provider feedback based on the GPS location of their smartphone, and are prompted to complete short feedback questions in the moment of visit.
A field study was designed to compare individuals' willingness to provide feedback to health providers compared to non-health service providers (ie. banks, theatres, car maintenance shops). The app MetricWire was used to host the study tool.
