Short bio:
Dr. Mohamed Naiel received the BSc degree in Electronics and Communications Engineering from Tanta University, Tanta, Egypt, in June 2006, the MSc degree in Communications and Information Technology from Nile University (NU), Giza, Egypt, in June 2010, and the PhD degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Concordia University, Montreal, Canada, in May 2017. During his MSc program, he did part of his research in a joint research project between NU and Microsoft Research Center in Cairo to tackle the problem of human action recognition in videos. During his PhD program, he worked as a research assistant with the Signal Processing Lab at Concordia University. He did part of his research in joint industrial Computer Vision based projects between: a) Concordia University and MakerBloks Inc. in 2015, and b) Concordia University and the Ville de Montreal in 2015/2016 to tackle the problem of traffic videos analysis. His research interests include signal, image and video processing, computer vision, machine learning and pattern recognition. Currently, he is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Systems Design Engineering Department, University of Waterloo, Waterloo, Canada. Dr. Naiel is a recipient of numerous honors and awards, including the Mitacs Accelerate Fellowship in 2015, and Concordia Full Tuition Recruitment Award in 2011. He has served as a reviewer for IEEE Transactions on Intelligent Transportation Systems (TITS), and IEEE International Symposium on Circuits and Systems (ISCAS). He was the chair of the IEEE Montreal Industry Relations Committee, IEEE Montreal Section between May 2016 and May 2018. During this role, he co-founded the IEEE Research Boost event in 2016.
