Benjamin Beelen
Benjamin is researching sustainable methods for the treatment and disposal of organic food waste in multi-unit residential buildings using wastewater infrastructure. His current work involves conducting a pilot project with food waste grinders (garburators), to estimate and evaluate the impact of food waste on wastewater treatment systems. Included in this study is the calculating the effect food waste grinders may have on greenhouse gas emissions during the disposal of organic food waste. Benjamin’s thesis will provide Ontarian municipalities with more information regarding their local management of organic food waste to help reach provincial waste disposal objectives. Outside of research, Benjamin enjoys wilderness camping, carpentry and rock climbing.
