Principal Investigator

XiaoYu Wu

XYWu

XiaoYu Wu is an assistant professor in the Department of Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering. He obtained his PhD at MIT, and his MS and BS degrees in Zhejiang University. He is enthusiastic about sustainability, especially how clean energy technologies can impact sustainability and how developing countries can incorporate sustainability in the development. He is also interested in developing new technologies and processes for efficiency energy conversion and clean chemical production.

Graduate students

Faris Ihab Elmanakhly

Faris

Faris is an Aerospace Engineering graduate, a certified Mechanical CAD designer and Master of Mechanical Engineering post-grad student at the University of Waterloo. He obtained his bachelor degree in Aerospace Engineering (BEng) specializing in Materials and Coatings from Swansea University, UK in June 2019. He has worked on various industrial projects sponsored by GE systems and Faradair UK Ltd, and he is specialized in Design & manufacturing, High-performance composite materials, and industrial coatings.

Faris joined our group in Fall 2020 to write his master thesis on the use of inorganic membranes for hydrogen production and chemical conversion.

Researchers

Michael Giovanniello

Mike Giovanniello

Mike Giovanniello began working in the group on modeling a hybrid energy storage system after graduating from William & Mary with a double major in Chinese and Mathematics. During his undergraduate studies, Mike completed an honors thesis investigating strategies for persuading culturally conservative demographics to trust climate change science. After spending six months in China—including a semester of language immersion in Beijing and a summer spent travelling to Buddhist sites across China researching commercialization—he hopes to return to work in the renewable energy sector. Going forward, he plans on leveraging his interest in sustainability and China, along with his math and research skills, to promote environmental collaborations between China and the United States. In addition to his career interests, Mike is an avid wilderness backpacker who enjoys soccer and meditation.

May Farhad

May

May Farhad is a 2A mechanical engineering student at the University of Waterloo. She is passionate about renewable energy and sustainability, and their effects on developing and recovering communities. May is currently working with the group on a project that aims to use solar energy to power a device that purifies water. She is looking at the interactions between different metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) layers in the device. In her free time, she enjoys weightlifting and drawing.

Alyssa Leon

Alyssa

Alyssa Leon is a 3A nanotechnology engineering student at the University of Waterloo. She is passionate about renewable energy and hopes to develop and explore new technologies for a cleaner and more sustainable future. In her free time, she enjoys playing piano and sewing.

Ritika Aggarwal

Ritika

Ritika Aggarwal is a Mechanical and Automation engineering undergraduate student at Indira Gandhi Delhi technical University for Women. She is a Mitacs- Graduate research intern. She's keen towards sustainability and wants to develop new technology to cater climate change problem. She likes to watch movies and play table tennis.

Yu Chun Fu

Yu Chun Fu

Yu Chun Fu is a 4A mechanical engineering student at the University of Waterloo. He is strongly interested in thermal engineering and hopes to use his passion in the subject to help transition the world to a future powered primarily by renewable energy sources. Yu Chun’s research project with the group is analyzing the thermodynamic efficiency of power-to-ammonia technology. In his free time, he enjoys watching basketball (Denver Nuggets) and playing board games with friends.
