Founded in 1985, the University of Waterloo Baja SAE Team is a group of undergraduate engineering students who design, build, test, and compete an off-road buggy vehicle every year. We compete against over a hundred other universities annually at SAE sanctioned competitions. While the core of our team is made up of upper-year engineering students, there are many junior members who provide valuable support with machining, maintenance, and testing.

Each team is provided a 10 hp Briggs & Stratton engine and is restricted from modifying it in any way. Aside from this constraint, team members design all the subsystems on the vehicle, such as the frame, suspension, drive-train. The competition itself tests the vehicle in terms of its acceleration, suspension, torque, and manoeuvrability.

Baja team at competition

In 2019, the team is aiming for a top 20 finish at competition and is working hard to get there. This year the team intends to completely reevaluate and redesign every aspect of the vehicle. Furthermore, the team plans to increase the amount of testing on the vehicle.
