The Self-Attitudes Lab published an article in the peer-reviewed journal Body Image showing that received a great deal of media attention, including features in: Psych Central, Science Daily, Science World Report, and World News.
We found that self-compassion is associated with less disordered eating and better body image for undergraduate women. Moreover, self-compassion appears to be especially helpful for who women who are more overweight than their peers. Usually, having a higher body mass index (BMI) is associated with more disordered eating and worse body image in women, but our lab found that this is not true if women are able to treat themselves with compassion and kindness when they experience disappointments and distress.
