Volunteering

Many of our Social Development Studies students make a difference to individuals and communities by volunteering!

Other benefits of volunteering include:

  • building experience

  • enhancing and complementing learning

  • making friends

  • building connections

  • stress relief

  • discovering a new skill or passion

Opportunities in Waterloo Region are occasionally posted on the SDS bulletin boards near REN 1609 and on the second floor of the Academic Centre at Renison.  Other resources are found below:

In the Community:  Volunteer Waterloo Region

Volunteer Waterloo RegionVolunteer Waterloo Region is an excellent resource for local volunteering opportunities. You can search for volunteer opportunities based on your interests, skills, and availability.

On Campus: At Renison and the University of Waterloo

Renison's English Language Institute runs the ELI Conversation Partner Program every term.  You can partner with an English for Academic Success (EFAS) student to help them practice their English while you learn about a different culture.  Contact the Renison Conversation Partner Program Coordinator.

The Student Success Office offers many opportunities for students to volunteer with the international student community on campus. Get involved with one of their programs to make new friends, have new experiences, and share what you love about student life and studying at Waterloo.

Tips

  • Some positions need a police check, which can often take several weeks to process. Get started early by contacting the organization at least a month or more ahead of time.
  • Consider and clearly communicate your availability for positions requiring a time commitment.  Give plenty of notice if you are unable to attend, if your term schedule changes, etc.
