On January 17th UWPS received a report of a male being assaulted and robbed of a cell phone. At approximately 10:00 pm a lone male was walking along the footpath by Ring Road opposite to the EV3 building. He was approached by two suspects, one from the front and one from the back, assaulted and relieved of his cell phone.

The victim suffered minor injuries.

The investigation has been turned over to Waterloo Regional Police Detectives.

Police remind members of the UW community to be cognizant of their surroundings and try to travel in well it areas at night.

Anyone who witnessed this incident or has information to assist in the investigation is requested to call Waterloo Regional Police at 519-653-7700, Ext. 6342, Crimestoppers, or U.W.P.S. at 519-888-4911.

Solicitation for funds at Eby Hall:

On January 17th at approximately 2:00 p.m. U.W.P.S. responded to Eby Hall for the report of someone soliciting funds for a charity named the Children’s Joy Foundation. It was reported that two females, one with long dark brown hair and bright red lipstick and the second wearing a gray hoodie and carrying a guitar, were going door to door asking for donations.

Officers were not able to locate the females to ascertain if they were from a legitimate charity or not.

While there is a charity named the Children’s Joy Foundation that is registered with the Canada Revenue Agency there are concerns that people not connected to the charity have been asking for money using the Foundations information.

Solicitation for private donations is only allowable on UW property by permission of the university. The Children’s Joy Foundation has not been given such permission and UWPS officers would like to speak with and identify anyone purporting to represent this organization.

Anyone representing a legitimate charity should be able to provide on demand:

o   The organizations charitable number

o   A tax receipt prior to a donation being provided

o   Contact information of the organization including phone number and address

They should also being wearing visible identification from the organization.
