U.W.P.S. Crime Report– Week of Nov. 11 to Nov. 18, 2013
Arrest in Theft of Bicycle:
- At 6:30 a.m. on Nov 17, UWPS officers investigated a male who was observed acting suspiciously in the area of a bike rack located on the north side of the S.L.C.
- Investigation revealed the male had cut the lock of a bike secured there and was about to leave the area with that bike
- He was arrested and subsequently found to be in possession of several weapons, bolt cutters, and a small amount of illegal drugs.
- He was also in violation of several terms of a probation order.
- Waterloo Regional Police were contacted to continue the investigation.
- A 28 year old Waterloo man, with no affiliation to the University of Waterloo, was charged with:
- Theft Under $5000
- Mischief Under $5000
- Possession of Property Obtained by Crime
- Possession of a Controlled Substance
- Breach of Probation (3 counts)
- Possession of Weapons Dangerous to the Public Peace
Charge of Dangerous Driving:
- On Nov 17 at 3:47 a.m. UWPS responded to the report of a single motor vehicle collision in Parking Lot X located on the north side of the Optometry building. A vehicle had hit a Helpline tower, careened across the parking lot driving through construction fence and come to rest when it hit the north facing wall of the new daycare building under construction.
- Five occupants of the vehicle sustained various injuries requiring transportation to hospital for treatment. None of the injuries were life threatening,
- Waterloo Regional Police attended to continue the investigation.
- A 19 year old male UW student has been charged with Dangerous Driving Causing Bodily Harm.
False Fire Alarms:
- U.W.P.S. is investigating two occurrences of pull station fire alarms being falsely activated. The first incident occurred at 8:13 p.m. on Nov. 14th in the North Quad of REV. The second incident occurred at 4:12 a.m. on Nov. 18 in the East Quad of REV.
Police remind that falsely activating a fire alarm is a criminal offence. This type of incident is taken very seriously by U.W.P.S. It results in a danger to people inside the building who have to evacuate. There is also a danger created for the fire departments and other emergency services personnel who respond in the belief there is a fire. False alarms are a major inconvenience for the residents of the building. These incidents are rigorously investigated by police and where those responsible are identified they will be charged criminally.
Police encourage anyone that has information regarding a fire alarm being falsely activated to report to their Don or U.W.P.S.
