Notice of Collection for CCTV Cameras and Review of Recordings

Under the authority of the University of Waterloo Act, 1972, the University of Waterloo gathers and maintains information used for the purposes of admission, registration, and other fundamental activities related to being a member of the University community and to attending a public post-secondary institution in the province of Ontario, Canada, including promoting and maintaining the safety and security of persons and property while on University grounds. Safety means a safe, secure University environment for all, including public order, crime detection and prevention, fire prevention, community safety, support and assistance for students and others at risk and in crisis, involving, where appropriate, communicating personal and/or personal health information with and seeking assistance from medical professionals, emergency contacts, family and others beyond the University community.

In furtherance of this purpose, the University operates CCTV cameras on its property. Signage located on campus grounds identifies the use of CCTV cameras.

Recorded footage obtained by such cameras, including any personal information, will be automatically erased after approximately 14 to 30 days. Copies of footage used for potential investigation, investigation or evidentiary purposes, will be retained for 30 months and 1 day. This time period may be extended in the event of an ongoing investigation or any related court proceedings.
