A significant industrial interest has been attracted in the application of the dynamic knee simulator to optimize functional knee braces. Funding has been secured from knee brace companies to investigate the effectiveness of functional knee braces in protecting the ACL in uninjured subjects. Until now, there existed no methodology to test the effectiveness of knee braces in protecting uninjured ACL during dynamic activities. We have developed a methodology to mount knee braces on cadaver knees and measure their effectiveness in reducing ACL strain. Our future plans in this area are to develop a knee brace specifically designed to reduce ACL injury in high risk subjects. New brace designs will be developed within this collaborative research program and evaluated experimentally using the knee simulator approach explained above.
