In 2020, the University of Waterloo assembled the President’s Anti-racism Taskforce (PART), making a public commitment to address systemic racism across its campuses. Two of PART’s recommendations called on the Student Success Office (SSO) to evaluate existing peer mentorship programs and implement a mentorship offering for incoming students identifying as Black, Indigenous, Racialized, 2SLGBTQIAA+, and/ or those from other historically underrepresented groups.
In January 2023, Tara Kleinsteuber joined the SSO to action this work. As a student equity specialist, Tara’s role was to re-imagine what community-care focused mentorship could look like. Just five short months later, the SSO welcomed the first cohort of student participants and leaders to the new Connection Collective program.
With the support of the Student Success Office, WUSA, Graduate Student Association, all six faculties and over 1000 student leaders, the University of Waterloo welcomed more than 6000 new students to campus during Orientation. Events for international, exchange, undergraduate and graduate students, as well as parents and supporters, ran from Thursday August 31 to Saturday September 9, 2023.
With lessons learned from last year’s return to in-person events and incorporated student feedback, an engaging roster of events was offered to the newest members of the Warrior community.
A new online option for academic skill development is now available.
Through three self-paced, interactive micro-courses, the SMART program provides flexible, on-demand student support.

On March 22, the Student Success Office (SSO), Waterloo Undergraduate Student Assocation (WUSA), and the Graduate Student Association (GSA) held the first Waterloo @ the Intersections event. The inaugural “On Belonging” was a thought-provoking and engaging event with the over-arching goal of bringing together the Waterloo community to discuss one important question: How has the experience of community shifted for you, for me, for us since the pandemic began?
The Advising Community of Practice invites you to submit a proposal to present at the 2023 Advisor Conference, a hybrid event taking place April 25-26, 2023. We hope you can share your advising best practices, theories, and/or approaches, or information about campus supports, services, and tools.
