Happy National Philanthropy Day!

Wednesday, November 15, 2017

November 15 is National Philanthropy Day, and we're celebrating the many ways our alumni, donors, volunteers and partners support our campus community.

Your gifts touch every corner of the University and its Affiliated and Federated Institutions, from student success to innovative programming to state-of-the-art facilities. Thank you for your generosity!

Here are just some of the ways you've helped us grow.

You made generous gifts

We're grateful to the 8,667 donors who gave to Waterloo last year. Our donors live in 19 different countries, and support everything from research to scholarships to student programs and new facilities.

Student Art Innovation Lab (SAIL)

Imagine walking through your local park, and there amidst the tranquil setting you notice a vintage silver Airstream trailer parked beside the trail. Eyebrow arched, you wonder what your next-door neighbours’ kid is doing with the gathering group at the Airstream?

THANK YOU FROM OUR STUDENTS

“It is hard to describe how thankful I am for this award. Growing up on a fruit farm, I learned that money does not grow on trees. The monetary gain from this scholarship will allow for me to pay for my tuition, textbooks, and my future educational endeavours.”

— Peter, student award recipient

Bauman Family gift focuses on Mentorship and Peace Incubation

Peace has been an important value in the lives of Aden and Joanne Bauman and their sons Barry, who passed away in 2016, and Michael.

THANK YOU FROM OUR STUDENTS

“Thank you very much for this scholarship. My mother was employed until this past September and we were unsure how we could afford my education. This scholarship will lighten the load of a $26,000 education and allow them to deservedly save some money for their retirement. Thank you for making a difference in my life.”

— Andrei, student award recipient

You built a culture of philanthropy

Waterloo's family campaign, the Keystone Campaign, raised over $1 million last year. Here's one story from a loyal donor.

The Professor and the Hockey Team

It started innocently enough. In the winter term of 2010, a hockey player in my class invited me to a game.

THANK YOU FROM OUR STUDENTS

“Without this award money, I would not be able to support my children and focus on school. This award has given me the ability to focus my attention on my studies and succeed. I am so grateful to the generosity of the University, but more importantly the donor.”

— Laura, student award recipient

You gave your time and expertise

Last year, Advancement volunteers gave more than 10,000 hours of their time to support the University. They're just some of the many people who work with us to build a stronger, more vibrant Waterloo.

Think About Math — Vancouver

Six Faculty of Math alumnae in Vancouver took time out of a beautiful weekend to participate in the Centre for Education in Mathematics and Computing's Think About Math program.

THANK YOU FROM OUR STUDENTS

“Success never happens in a vacuum. It takes caring and dedicated teachers, it takes a group of brilliant and driven friends, and of course, it takes people like you who empower students with your support. Thank you for your help along the way.”

— Mickey, student award winner

You encouraged our students to thrive

By giving to Waterloo, you've made a profound impact on our students. Thank you for helping them fulfill their greatest potential.
