Virtual Reality in the Classroom: An Introduction for Instructors

Tuesday, June 2, 2026 10:00 am - 11:00 am EDT (GMT -04:00)

Location: In-person, Tech Sandbox (LIB 329)

Facilitators: Rebecca MacAlpine

Description

In this one-hour hands-on workshop, instructors will be introduced to the Meta Quest 3 VR headsets and explore how virtual reality can support teaching and learning across disciplines. Participants will learn the core functions of the headset, review examples of educational use cases, and discuss considerations for classroom integration. The session concludes with guided free exploration time, giving participants the opportunity to test applications, experiment with the technology, and imagine how VR might fit into their own courses.

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Identify basic VR opportunities and constraints for teaching and learning.
  • Demonstrate essential headset setup and navigation skills (e.g., fit/comfort adjustments, launching an app, using controllers, and accessing safety boundaries) to participate in a VR learning activity.
  • Assess potential VR use cases for a specific course context, considering alignment to learning goals, learner experience (including accessibility and motion sensitivity), and logistical factors (space, supervision, time, and device management).
  • Draft a preliminary idea for a VR-enabled learning activity (or pilot plan) that includes a learning goal, a proposed VR experience/application, and a basic implementation approach for your teaching context.
