Large public displays are increasingly being deployed in a variety of spaces, including shopping malls, airports and museums. Likewise, personal devices, such as smartphones and tablets, have become commonplace. This work explores the design space of personal devices being used as the interactive medium for large interactive displays, including the challenges (i.e., barriers to interaction) that a designer in this space faces and how to overcome them. For example, a personal device is by nature familiar to the users, and can help overcome the barrier of social inhibition.
