Cody Groat is an Assistant Professor in the Department of History and the Indigenous Studies Program at Western University. He is an award-winning public historian who has received a King Charles III Coronation Medal and the Lieutenant Governor’s Ontario Heritage Award for Excellence in Conservation. Cody is the Project Lead for a multi-site UNESCO World Heritage nomination of former Residential School properties and serves internationally on the UNESCO Memory of the World International Advisory Committee. Cody graduated with a PhD in History from Wilfrid Laurier University.
The commemoration of a nation’s past is a highly contested process that is shaped by competing, and often diverging, interests. In this talk, Cody Groat will discuss his new book, Always a Part of the Land: the Federal Commemoration of Indigenous Histories, which calls for a critical reinterpretation not only of Canada's history but also of how we think about the past and how this shapes ongoing relationships between Indigenous peoples and the state.
