Working Within and Without International Order: Asian Solidarities in the Making of the Third World, 1945-1955

2026 conference keynote by Dr. Cindy Ewing, University of Toronto

Dr. Cindy Ewing is the Assistant Professor of Contemporary International History in the Department of History at the University of Toronto and the International Relations Program at Trinity College.

Cindy's work focuses on the interconnected histories of rights, decolonization, and the Cold War in South and Southeast Asia across the twentieth century. Her work has appeared in The American Historical ReviewJournal of Global HistoryComparative Studies of South Asia, Africa and the Middle East, and Cold War History, among others. Her in-progress book manuscript examines the global circulation of rights ideas in the era of decolonization and the making of the post-1945 international order. At the University of Toronto, she teaches courses on the histories of human rights, the Vietnam War, the Global Cold War, and specialized topics in international law. She earned a BA from Harvard University, MA from the University of Chicago, and PhD in International and Global History from Yale University.
