A Life of Service: Reflections from a British Home Child and Second World War Veteran
Featuring George Beardshaw
George Beardshaw is one over 100,000 children who migrated to Canada between 1869-1948 as part of the British Home Child program, which placed inmates of British orphanages with Canadian families, many of whom required to perform unpaid labour. George left his placement on an Ontario farm to serve in the Queen’s Own Rifles during the Second World War. This month he celebrates his 100th birthday.
This event, part of the People Make History biannual lecture series that is generously supported by Laurier Brantford's Senior Executive Office, invites witnesses and participants of historic events or movements to tell their stories. By sharing their memories, they bring history alive and make critical links between past and contemporary times.
