Dr. Jacqueline Murray

Jacqueline Murray

It is an honour to have been elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society. It is not only a recognition of my own research, but also underscores the continuing importance of medieval history to the academy generally, to history programs, and to our Canadian society.

Dr. Jacqueline Murray, University Professor Emerita in the Department of History, at the University of Guelph was elected to the Royal Society of Canada in September 2026.

The Royal Society of Canada's citation states:

Jacqueline Murray’s intellectual creativity and impeccable scholarship have transformed the landscape of premodern European history. Her groundbreaking research in premodern sex, sexualities, genders and bodies has introduced innovative approaches to the study of medieval women and men and established the new research field of premodern men and masculinities. As a public humanist, she bridges her historical scholarship to explicate the premodern foundations of contemporary social issues and institutions.

Dr. Murray often taught the History of Sexuality and Gender course in the Tri-U MA program which was taken by students from the three universities. She also supervised many MA and PhD students in the program as well as sat on several committees over the years. She remains a member of the Graduate Faculty, and is available for committees.

Since Dr. Murray's retirement in 2023, she continues to write. Her most recent work published in April this year is entitled, From Texts to Bodies : Sexes, Genders, and Sexualities in Premodern Europe (London: Routledge).

Dr. Murray is also a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society. She is co-editor of the Gender in the Middle Ages Series for Boydell and Brewer Publishing in the U.K and recently co-edited Volume 23, Premodern Masculinities in Transition, with Konrad Eisenbicher. Dr. Murray was the founding president of the Society for Medieval Feminist Scholarship and is past president of the Canadian Society of Medievalists.
