The Tri-University History program congratulates two professors, Dr. Talena Atfield and Dr. Lianne C. Leddy on their Canada Research Chair awards. 

Dr. Leddy holds the Canada Research Chair in Indigenous Histories and Historical Practice in Canada at Wilfrid Laurier University.

Dr. Atfield holds the Canada Research Chair in Tentewatenikonhra'khánion (We Will Put Our Minds Together) at the University of Waterloo.

Dorota Kupis, PhD student at Wilfrid Laurier University was awarded the Tri-U History essay prize at the Tri-U History conference on March 9 at the University of Guelph. Her winning article, “The Political Struggle Behind the Delgamuukw Case: The 1994-1996 Trilateral Treaty Negotiations with the Gitxsan and Wet’suwet’en,” was published in BC Studies.

Jennifer McKay, University of Waterloo, successfully defended her dissertation, "Stalin's Last Comrade: Hanna Wolf and the 'Karl Marx' Party College in the German Democratic Republic," on October 31, 2023. 

The Tri-U congratulates six students who became PhD Candidates during Fall 2023. Successful completion of their comprehensive exams which includes a written and oral component moves them into the proposal writing stage for their research. This is an exciting milestone achievement.

Dr. Lianne C. Leddy, history faculty member at Wilfrid Laurier University, receives the Governor General's history award for scholarly research in 2023.

Emily Kaliel, PhD candidate at the University of Guelph, was awarded the Segall Prize by the Canadian Society for the History of Medicine (CSHM) at their annual conference held on 27-29 May, 2023. Emily’s paper was entitled: “’Rather Isolated Communities Remote from Medical Aid’:  Changing Public Health Landscapes in Alberta at Mid-century.”

In March 2023, the Tri-University Graduate Program in History (Tri-U) was excited to learn that the Woodland Cultural Centre (WCC) announced Heather George’s appointment as their new executive director. Heather is a PhD candidate in history at the University of Waterloo supervised by Dr. Susan Roy. Heather is Kanien’kehá:ka and Euro-Canadian, her father’s family are from Akwesasne, along the St. Lawrence River.
