Building on research conducted during my fourth-year research seminar, my MRP investigates publications of the Canadian women’s movement in the 1980s, seeking to understand the key issues of the movement after the end of what has been deemed the “second wave”. In looking beyond this deadline, my research builds on emerging theories in the field that combat the periodization of the feminist movement, drawing attention to the consistency of the women’s liberation movement between the years of the waves. Additionally, my research is attentive to the ways that race, class, and national identity are framed in the popular publications of liberation groups. The magazines that form my source base all share a common origin. Initially founded by the International Women’s Day Committee (IWDC), the magazine creators separated and reconfigured themselves in the years between 1980 and 1992. Part of what I will explore are the differences in how a socialist feminist agenda is deployed, in an effort to understand the breadth of the movement.
