Shamylla van der Hall-Rose is a PhD student in History at the University of Guelph. She received an Honours BA in History and a Minor in English at the University of British Columbia. Her BA Honours Thesis focused on skateboard history and the creation of one of Canada’s oldest still active skateboard parks, the East Vancouver China Creek South Park.

Shamylla received her MA in History at York University, with her research there focusing on Canadian female athletes and the Winter X Games.

Shamylla’s current research observes the historical interactions of sport, community, and culture in Canada during the 20th and 21st centuries. Focusing on athletic cultural history, with a specific interest in the affect of youth athletic culture and how its evolutions shift sport culture, her research delves into the contradictions of evidence, nostalgic memory, and how athletic cultures affect communities as a whole.
