Generative AI: an overview of the strengths and weaknesses of Large Language Models (and their image counterparts)

Panel on Generative AI handout

The stunning emergence of AI-powered tools like ChatGPT and DALL-E in late 2022 sparked overnight adoption and fierce debate. In this session, Eric Cohen and Malik Datardina plan to cut through the hype and highlight how the profession, accounting research, and education may be transformed by these rapidly-evolving large language models and creative image generators.

The potential benefits and limitations of tapping into these AI systems to aid practice, summarize research, generate test questions, enhance lectures, and improve student learning outcomes will be explored. With powerful capabilities comes great responsibility, so the need for academic vigilance given generative AI's potential risks relating to bias, inaccuracy, and overreliance will also be discussed. We will also explore the implications for what the technology means for work. Will it eliminate or create jobs? Or is it more realistic to see how it can amplify what we do today?

The goal is to empower participants to harness transformative AI while avoiding the pitfalls. If you're curious about how to exploit these futuristic tools in your work without letting the machines take over, then this session is for you!
