John Parish

The Water Institute is honoured and excited to announce the inaugural competition for the John Parish Memorial Graduate Scholarship. The John Parish Memorial Scholarship was established by friends and family in memory of John Parish. John Parish (BES’85) was a pioneer in the field of fluvial geomorphology – studying rivers and river processes, and how they influence the lands around them. He proudly founded PARISH Geomorphic Ltd. in 1997, and merged his company with Matrix Solutions Inc. in 2015. John was instrumental in the development of policies and implementation guidelines for managing watersheds in Southern Ontario, and was a champion for natural river restoration across Canada.

John had an infectious passion for rivers and their natural processes which he eagerly shared with colleagues and students. The kids and I are very excited to share this opportunity with the University of Waterloo and respective candidates for this scholarship to ignite this passion in others.

One scholarship valued at $5,000 will be awarded in 2022-23 to a full-time graduate student at the University of Waterloo whose research is in the fields of fluvial geomorphology, river and stream processes, or river and aquatic habitat protection and restoration. Selection will be based on the student’s anticipated research contribution and academic excellence. The Water Institute will administer the scholarship application and selection process during the Fall academic term. It is expected that the annual scholarship will be available for a number of years.

Please contact Kevin Boehmer at the Water Institute for further details or the application package. Applications for the 2022-23 John Parish Graduate Scholarship are due by November 18, 2022.
