Artificial Sweeteners Found to Persist in Grand River Watershed

Sherry Schiff, a Professor in the Department of Earth & Environmental Sciences, is a co-author on a recently published article which found high levels of artificial sweeteners present in water throughout the Grand River watershed, including both river water and municipal tap water. The levels of these chemicals were found to be distributed in a way that they could serve as effective wastewater tracers in rivers. The concentrations of the artificial sweeteners were found to be the highest concentrations recorded in surface waters to date.
