Fish Mutation due to Grand River Water Quality Reported

Wednesday, October 10, 2012
Mark Servos and his research team in the Department of Biology have found mutations in the rainbow darter fish in the Grand River downstream of the Waterloo and Kitchener water treatment plants. Among the findings was that male fish examined were found to have uncharacteristically large eggs and other female traits. The team is planning additional research in the hopes of determining if the situation is worsening and which compounds are leading to the changes.
