Hohai University, China’s foremost university in water and the environment, recently hosted the 8th International Conference on Water Resources and Environment Research (ICWRER 2019). From June 14th to 18th, over 300 delegates, including over 70 international attendees from 13 countries, visited Hohai University in Nanjing, China, to participate in the conference.
Initiated by University Professor Keith Hipel and with support from Waterloo’s Department of Systems Design Engineering and the Faculty of Engineering, the first ICWRER conference was held at the University of Waterloo in 1993 to honour the late Professor T.E. Unny for his life-long accomplishments in hydrology and hydraulics. The conference has grown in popularity over the years and gained a loyal following of delegates who attended past events in Kyoto, Japan (1996, 2016), Brisbane, Australia (1999), Dresden, Germany (2002), Adelaide, Australia (2008), Quebec City, Canada (2010) and Koblenz, Germany (2013).
The ICWRER brings together physical and societal systems experts from around the globe to better understand water resources and environment systems in order to reach more informed decisions when addressing complex problems. Conference topics included areas such as climate change, geographical information systems and remote sensing, stochastic hydrology, sustainable water management, surface water and groundwater interaction, ecosystem modelling, conflict resolution, scaling problems in hydrology and water resources, environmental management, and risk analysis.
