Partners for Action director Shawna Peddle spoke to the CBC on the flood survey Windsor residents are being asked to take part in. In partnership with University of Waterloo researchers and the Red Cross, residents who have suffered the onslaught of floods in the area in recent years will be surveyed. The results will inform a national FloodSmart Canada campaign and provide insight into how to protect other Canadian communities from incurring similar damage.
"If you could go back in time — one year, two years, to two months before your last flood, what do you wish you'd known?" said Peddle. "That's the question we want to ask people, because if they can tell us that and they've been through it, then we can use that to prepare and protect other people as well."
Two years ago, Partners in Action surveyed communities across Canada in high-risk flooding areas and authored Flood Risk & Homeowner Awareness. They learned many residents were unaware of their risks and what their insurance coverage was.
Partners for Action is an applied research network based out of the University of Waterloo Faculty of Environment that aims to advance flood resiliency in Canada in the face of a changing climate and extreme weather.
