We are delighted to announce that Professor Roy Brouwer has been re-appointed as the Water Institute’s Executive Director, after extensive consultation of all Water Institute members last year. Brouwer, who has been in the role since 2016, began his second term as Executive Director on January 1, 2021.
“Professor Brouwer’s leadership has been pivotal to the Water Institute’s visibility, growth, and increased impact over the last five years,” said Charmaine Dean, Vice-President, Research and International, University of Waterloo. “His accomplishments, which include connecting and shaping the Institute’s research areas, integrating social sciences in water research, education and outreach, and increasing external funding are impressive. He has built new relationships with leading international water organizations and appointed eminent international water scholars to the Institute’s international advisory board. I am confident that the next five years will result in equally notable successes as he leads the implementation of the Water Institute’s new strategic plan which was developed in collaboration with the Institute’s Strategic Planning Committee and membership.”
In addition to his leadership role at the Water Institute, Brouwer teaches the course Water Resource Economics, in his home department of Economics, and conducts research with his Water Economics Research Group (WERG) in Canadian and internationally funded research projects around the world. He is cross-appointed in the departments of Earth and Environmental Science, Civil and Environmental Engineering, and the School of Environment, Resources and Sustainability where he supervises graduate students. He is also a visiting professor at the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology in Zürich, a member of the International Scientific Advisory Committee of the Chinese Research Academy of Environmental Sciences (CRAES) and the External Advisory Board of the Vienna Technical University Doctoral Programme on Water Resource Systems, and the Founding Editor-in-Chief of the Elsevier journal Water Resources and Economics.
Congratulations Professor Brouwer!
