Water Institute Member David Rudolph, professor in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, is serving as conference co-chair of the 3rd International Groundwater-Agriculture Conference, Toward Sustainable Groundwater in Agriculture - Linking Science and Policy. The conference will take place June 17-20, 2024, in San Francisco and is being organized by University of California, Davis and The Water Education Foundation. The Water Institute is a cooperating organization.

The three-day international conference will bring together leading scientists, policy analysts and decision makers, and agricultural and environmental interest group representatives from around the world. The conference goal is to define and highlight the science of and the challenges in groundwater resources management and groundwater quality protection within and related to agricultural landscapes.

“This 3rd offering of the conference provides a great opportunity to showcase success stories within the groundwater and agriculture nexus over the last decade. The growing global awareness of groundwater's role in the future of agriculture in the face of a changing climate makes the timing of this conference particularly critical,” says David Rudolph.

Professor Rudolph, who also co-chaired the conference in 2016, will co-chair with his long-time colleague Thomas Harter, professor from University of California, Davis, a leader in agricultural outreach within the challenging Central Valley area of California.

UC Davis is renowned for applying emerging technologies and advanced study techniques to manage complex and highly multidisciplinary water and agriculture management issues, advising the development of new water management policy in the Central Valley region.

Conference themes and hot topics this year will include:

  • The current nexus of groundwater, food production, and modern agricultural practices
  • Reporting on recent success stories towards sustainable groundwater/agricultural management
  • International perspectives on groundwater's role in the future of agriculture
  • Emerging issues of groundwater and surface water interactions within the agricultural landscape

The conference is now accepting abstracts for both oral and poster presentations. The submission portal can be found on the conference website, and abstracts are due by January 31, 2024.
