Water In Focus

On Friday, February 2nd, the Society of the Water Institute Graduate Students (SWIGS) held their Water in focus – Photography workshop and nature walk.

A group of thirteen captured the beauty of Laurel Creek under the guidance of Water Institute member Rob de Loë, Professor & Associate Dean, Research, Faculty of Environment, School of Environment, Resources and Sustainability.

For three decades, Rob’s teaching and research focused on water and environmental governance in the areas of climate change adaptation, local capacity for water management, transboundary water governance, and collaborative approaches to environmental problem solving.

Starting in late 2019, Rob began winding down his water governance research program and his new research program explores how photography can be used to build understanding around challenging science and policy questions in the environmental domain.

This latest workshop shared hand's-on skills taught in the ERS 318 Photography for Sustainability course to help the group become better photographers and how to use photography to communicate research ideas effectively and with greater impact.

The workshop also marked the launch of the Water in Focus Photography Contest. This contest invites students, staff, and University of Waterloo community members to explore the significance of water in their daily lives through a creative lens! Winning photographs will receive prizes and will be exhibited at the Water Institute's World Water Day event on March 22, 2024.

Photo submissions are being accepted here.
